Double celebration for uFraction8

25 October 2017

ECCI resident start-up uFraction8 has topped the ranks of two international innovation competitions in less than a week.

Not content with a top ten spot at the ClimateLaunchpad final - the world’s biggest cleantech competition - in Cyprus on Thursday 19 October, two days later UFractions8's expert pitchers hotfooted it to London to win the Grand Prize in the Japan-based TECH PLANTER programme.

As winners of TECH PLANTER - an accelerator program specifically designed for entrepreneurs who use the power of science and technology - the ECCI start-up received 300,000 Yen and support to attend the prestigious Hyper-Interdisciplinary Conference in Japan in March 2018.

uFraction8 were joined by fellow ECCI residents Industrial Nature and EHCO Shoes at the ClimateLaunchpad worldwide Grand Final. As the only Scottish company in the top ten, uFraction8 will gain access to the Climate-KIC Accelerator programme offered at ECCI.

Start-up Bio Alkanol Gel from Kenya were the overall winners of ClimateLaunchpad 2017. Their business idea is based on their technology to obtain liquid fuel from waste materials. Second prize went to MeduSOIL from Switzerland, who developed microbe cement. Vienna Textile Lab from Austria came third with their idea for colouring textiles with bacteria-based pigments.

This year ClimateLaunchpad attracted a record number of 1,000 cleantech entrepreneurs applying for national competitions in 35 countries around the world.

uFraction8 technology addresses challenges in the bio-manufacturing industry by using microfluidics – the science of manipulating and controlling fluids – at scale as a sustainable and energy efficient alternative to industrial centrifuges.

Dr Monika Tomecka, Executive Director of uFraction8, said: “We are delighted to have won in Cyprus and London.

"The TECH PLANTER success means we will be sponsored to go to Japan in March for a conference and be introduced to Japanese companies that might be interested in our technology.

"We’re looking forward to a lot more good news to come!”

Ed Craig, ECCI’s Deputy Director and Head of Innovation, said:

“Massive congratulations to Industrial Nature, EHCO Shoes and especially to UFraction8 who all did Scotland proud in ClimateLaunchpad 2017.

“uFraction8's double success shows how ECCI’s dynamic support programmes and international reach can help companies access fantastic opportunities and go on to apply their climate innovations and solutions all around the world.”
