Climate innovation

Thinking big: innovation at scale.

Tackling climate change presents systemic challenges which demand that organisations find new and innovative ways of working together.

Thinking big: innovation at scale

Whether it’s reimagining and redesigning places, influencing and changing behaviours, embedding a circular economy or making shared climate commitments - everything we need to do to address climate change, and meet our national and international targets, requires us to think big, work collectively towards a shared ambition and build strong partnerships.

ECCI teams collaborate to support place-based climate action and area-based emissions through initiatives such as the Place-based Climate Action Network and Edinburgh Climate Commission. Working with the City of Edinburgh Council and partners, the Commission brings together stakeholders from across the private, public and third sector and act as a ‘critical friend’ to the Council and city in its journey to Net Zero.

Walking the talk

Through ECCI's partnership with EIT Climate-KIC, the three stage Accelerator programme gave entrepreneurs funding, coaching and support to develop a successful business model. From 2017-2020, ECCI supported 43 innovative climate start-ups to create 115 jobs, earn over £8m investment and £6.5m in grants and awards, create £1.44m turnover and 42 new products and services.

In 2016, we won a Guardian Sustainable Business Award for our work in breaking down low carbon barriers. The award also recognises our dynamic and non-traditional approach in bringing people together to deliver effective sustainable outcomes.

As climate action leaders, it’s important to us that we practice what we preach, starting with our immediate environment. We transformed a draughty, historical building into our state-of-the-art hub - demonstrating that beautiful spaces can also meet exacting energy standards.
