Turkey and Syria Earthquake Relief Fundraiser

Since 2019, the interdisciplinary One Health FIELD Network at the University of Edinburgh has conducted collaborative research with Syrian-led organisations in southern Turkey and northern Syria on strengthening food security and agricultural livelihoods for displaced populations. The February 2023 earthquake in the Turkish-Syrian border region had a devastating impact on our local partners, as well as many Syrians who in the past have participated in our research.

To support our friends and collaborators in this terrible time, the One Health FIELD Network invites you to take part in this fundraising activity. All donations will benefit the You Are Not Alone emergency response in northern Syria, led by our network’s longstanding partner Syrian Academic Expertise: yanacampaign.wordpress.com

Syrian Academic Expertise has taken the lead on coordinating the efforts of local humanitarian organisations in Northwest Syria and is already providing food aid to populations so far cut off from international assistance.

This fundraising event includes the following speakers:

• Dr Shaher Abdullateef, Syrian Academic Expertise (remotely)
• Prof Lisa Boden, Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Security and One Health FIELD Network
• Dr Ann-Christin Zuntz, Social Anthropology and One Health FIELD Network

During the event, Dr Abdullateef will start by giving a situation report from the emergency response, and there will be an opportunity to ask questions.

Followed by a screening of 2023 documentary "With the Sickle and Songs", which the One Health FIELD Network and Syrian-led organisations Syrian Academic Expertise and Douzan Art & Culture produced for their 2022/3 FIELD SONGS project. The documentary captures the ongoing relevance of Syrian (agri)cultural heritage in Turkey and northern Syria, under threat by displacement, climate change, and now the after-effects of the earthquake. This film was made in Gaziantep and regions close to the Syrian border and offers insights into the lives and livelihoods in these places, which have been so badly affected.
