Scottish Carbon Capture and Storage (SCCS) celebrates online learning milestone

ECCI resident organisation Scottish Carbon Capture & Storage (SCCS) recently announced a significant milestone for its free Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) course. As of mid-June, the course has successfully reached over 40,000 learners worldwide.

The Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on CCS, developed and delivered by leading academics from the University of Edinburgh continues to attract a diverse group of participants. Designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of CCS, the course covers everything from fundamental concepts to advanced applications, featuring real-world case studies, hands-on exercises, and interactive discussions.

Dr. Erika Palfi, the course organiser, expressed her excitement about this achievement: “We are immensely proud to have reached over 40,000 learners. This milestone reflects the growing global interest in carbon capture and storage as a critical technology for mitigating climate change.

"Our aim has always been to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to make a positive impact on the environment. Reaching this number of learners demonstrates the course’s effectiveness and accessibility.”

The CCS course is available on demand, allowing learners to start at any time and progress at their own pace. It is offered in both English and Mandarin, making it accessible to a broader audience.

Dr. Palfi highlighted the importance of impartial education on CCS: “Increasing awareness and understanding of CCS is vital for our global climate mitigation efforts. By providing impartial and comprehensive education, we aim to inform rather than sway opinions, fostering a community of informed individuals from diverse backgrounds who are ready to tackle the challenges of climate change.”

SCCS encourages new learners to join this growing community and be part of the solution to climate change. The course is available on both edX and Coursera platforms.

Scottish Carbon Capture and Storage

With a secritariat based at ECCI, Scottish Carbon Capture and Storage (SCCS) is the largest carbon capture and storage (CCS) research group in the UK.

SCCS provides a single point of coordination for CCS research, from carbon capture engineering and geoscience to social perceptions and environmental impact through to regulation and economics.
