Dr Andy Cross

Co-Director

Andy joined ECCI in 2015 in his role as Impact Coordinator for the University of Edinburgh’s School of GeoSciences, and took up the role of Deputy Director in January 2023, and Co-Director in February 2026. Andy is also an Undergraduate Fellow with the Edinburgh Futures Institute, part of the that developed and now delivers the new EFI Undergraduate Programme (MA Interdisciplinary Futures) that launched in September 2023. Alongside this Andy has been involved in curriculum development work across the university, where he was co-lead of the experiential learning workstream for the Curriculum Transformation Project (work that he is continuing to lead in the School of GeoSciences).

Andy’s research has focused on methods for carbon sequestration including biochar and climate-smart agriculture, and more recently on educational development including experiential and community service learning, interdisciplinary approaches to dealing with wicked problems, and aligning University Curricula with Net-Zero skills.

Andy holds a PhD in forestry and climate change from the University of Edinburgh and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
