Dr Andy Cross

Deputy Director

Andy joined ECCI in 2015 in his role as Impact Coordinator for the University of Edinburgh’s School of GeoSciences and took up the role of Deputy Director in January 2023.

In his role as Impact Coordinator, Andy captures and promotes the wide range of external impact from research across the School. This covers everything from its role in informing policy to the creation of products and services.

He also helps develop links between researchers in the School of GeoSciences and ECCI’s thriving network of contacts and stakeholders.

Andy is an Associate with the Institute for Academic Development, where he works on curriculum development and educational research. This includes promoting community engagement in the University of Edinburgh’s curriculum. He also focuses on boosting research and teaching through interdisciplinary approaches and ‘living labs’, which trial ideas in the real world.

Before this Andy was a Research Associate in the University of Edinburgh’s School of GeoSciences. Here he focussed on methods of carbon sequestration including biochar and climate-smart agriculture.

Andy holds a PhD in forestry and climate change from the University of Edinburgh and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
