ECCI seeks carbon audit and reporting interns

ECCI is seeking two students for a two to three-month paid placement as part of its partnership with Climate-KIC.

The successful candidates will conduct a carbon audit for businesses and gather all reporting data for various international programmes.

  • Duration: three month placement (June – August 2018)
  • Hours: 20 hours (three days) per month (specific days of work by arrangement with ECCI)
  • Pay: £12.53 per hour

ECCI is the Scotland base for Climate-KIC's Accelerator & Greenhouse schemes – high profile EU-funded support programmes for start-ups – which give entrepreneurs funding and support to translate their inventions into business plans.

Climate-KIC was brought to Scotland for the first time by ECCI in 2017. In its first year, our Climate-KIC Accelerator programme helped 17 start-ups scoop 14 awards, secure more than £400,000 in investment and save the equivalent of more than 260,000 tonnes of carbon in a year.

These posts will give candidates an insight into how low carbon innovation is supported and the impact low carbon products and services can have on climate change.

Key responsibilities

The Carbon Audit and Reporting Interns will work with the innovation team at ECCI as well as the programme coaches to collate all relevant data in order to conduct a carbon audit on the new innovative products developed by businesses and collect evidence for Climate-KIC programmes, ensuring they meet the funder's (EIT) requirements.

This will include compling all information into a masterspreadsheet, liaising with coaches, start-ups and ECCI staff to provide evidence of progress, work with the communications team to showcase and write 'success stories' as well as providing a carbon audit report for each business.

Each intern will conduct carbon audits for the start-ups on the Greenhouse and Accelerator (Stage 1, 2 & 3) programmes, collating reporting data to meet funder's requirements. It is hoped that the two students will work together on this project.

Key outcomes

  • Two page carbon audits for each business (20 start-ups between minumum two interns)
  • Completed spreadsheet with all reporting data recorded that meets EIT requirements
  • All evidence collected to back up the data recorded
  • Select one success story from each programme and collate information

Experience

  • Degree in a related field (e.g. geosciences, environmental studies, renewable energy) - preferably an MSc in carbon management or environmental science.
  • Carbon accounting experience or knowledge
  • Experience of data management and/or analysis
  • Experience of using Excel data spreadsheets
  • Experience of problem solving, dealing with various demands simultaneously
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills - must be proactive and sociable
  • A genuine interest in low carbon innovation and support
  • Experience in science communication is desirable
  • Project experience and/or knowledge of KPIs is desirable
